How I Ended Up In The Vending Business…

…And Made A Website About The Business

My name is Dennis and in the picture with me is my wife Marcie. We live in Iowa just three miles from the Mississippi River. I ended up here when my wife graduated from the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and accepted a job in Burlington, Iowa.

At times I felt a bit insecure with my wife going onto school and I think that weighed into me wanting to start my own business. I’d have to say, I do not think she wanted me to feel this way, but the insecure feelings were there while watching her move forward with her dream and career.

I’d had many different jobs in my life, but never enjoyed working for someone else. And working in a factory was not an option for me. I wanted to own my own business like so many people do but did not have much money to start it.

This is a common problem that many people face along with many other setbacks. I solved the problems, I overcame the setbacks, and so can you. How? Read my story…

Snack Box Employer

I was working for a snack box company in Northeast Iowa when one day my employer was telling me about his brother-in-law that thought the way you get ahead in life was to win the lottery. Then he proceeded to tell me I reminded him of his brother-in-law.

That was just what I needed to hear, my employer thinks I am a simpleton, my wife was passing me by with her education, and I was just spinning my wheels going nowhere in life.

It was at this point I thought, “Dennis, you may not have or may never have the education your wife is getting, but you have God given abilities that no one can take away.”

You see, I was the salesman for my employer. My employer had hired me to sell new accounts originally along with a girl that was going to be his route person. After a few short weeks she quit and my employer told me he was going to put me on the route.

My duties had just doubled. I was to run a route, which my employer refused to pay me a living wage to run. What I did each day when I went out on the route I would spend extra time placing at least two new snack box accounts. By doing this I made extra money, which helped my wife and I keep our heads above water.

The Decision Was Made

I came to the conclusion that if I did not do something with my life I could find myself lining this employer’s pocket while he thought I was a simpleton. I worried that once my wife graduated and went to work in a hospital she could dump me for a more successful doctor or who knew, maybe another therapist.

I decided it was time to roll the dice and take a chance. I got the name of the snack box manufacturer off the back of one of my employers snack boxes. I had just received my tax refund of six hundred dollars.

I ordered one hundred boxes. When they came in I went to a company called Farner Bocken (a wholesale Candy company) and bought enough candy to fill six boxes.

We were living in an apartment and were not to be operating a business from it. I had to sneak the product in the apartment after dark. We kept it in the closet of our bedroom. I filled two boxes and that Saturday I placed two new accounts. That Monday I went back to work for my employer but could not wait for the following Saturday.

After the longest week of my life, Saturday finally rolled around and you can guess this week I was ready with four boxes. Two would replenish the two existing accounts I had set up the Saturday before and the other two were for two new accounts. This process went on until the route was getting nearly full.

We had fulfilled the six-month lease on our apartment, so we went looking for a house in the country where we did not have to worry about running a business. Well, we found a place in the country and rented it. I did not tell my landlord about my business though, for fear he would say no to renting to us.

I still did not think I could quit my job but I new I wanted to keep growing. Well, luck has a way of working things out for those who apply themselves.

My employer was suffering from growing pains since he and his wife did not understand that they needed to cut back on their personal life style while I was growing their business for them. My boss came to me and said he was going to cut me to a four-day workweek. He was going to give me Wednesdays off just till they could catch their breath after all the growth they had experienced.

What a break! I could now start a Wednesday route of my own since my Saturday route was all but full. I continued to grow my Wednesday route until it was full.

Now my employer came to me and said he was going to give me the five-day workweek again. I thought, “Now what am I going to do? I have two routes and with the employer wanting me to start running five days for him how was I going to continue to grow?” I was still uncomfortable about trying to live off of two routes and continue with the growth.

I was looking in the want ads for a part time job when I found my answer. I would take a part time job delivering papers. I had never delivered papers as a boy but this seemed to be the answer. I took on delivering over two hundred newspapers a day and told my boss he had two weeks to find my replacement.

You talk about feeling good; you cannot imagine how good it felt telling this employer good-bye.

The Paper Route

I had to get up at midnight to get all my papers delivered before six in the morning. The Sunday papers were well over two hundred and you had to put them together on top of it. My wife was still in school studying for her new career. We had two young boys at home.

My wife felt sorry for me so on Sunday she would help me. We would put a mattress in the back of the van for the boys to sleep on while the two of us would deliver papers.

I kept growing the snack box business during the week and it was filling out nicely and now came the next hurdle; my wife graduated and accepted a position in Burlington Iowa, which was over a hundred miles from where I had started my snack box route.

I gave up the paper route and we moved closer to her work. The business continued to grow until we covered close to half the state of Iowa. I think we were probably the largest snack box company in the state of Iowa before we sold it.

The Vending Business

Life was good for our family. We now owned our own home, my wife was working in her field of study, and the business was doing very well. One day a customer said to me, I know you have this snack box route but what do you do for a living?

What a crushing blow to my ego. I probably made four times this individuals income, but he had just asked me what I did for a living. The thought went through my head what does my wife think of me.

A few weeks later I decided one day to call on some businesses about setting up vending machine accounts. I had a couple of small snack machine accounts that I run on my snack box route and I thought “How difficult can it be to start a full line vending company?”.

Well, that day I sold my first full line vending account! This company had seventy-five employees and I’m thinking this will be enough business I will only have to run one account. Well to say the least, I was a bit ignorant when it came to the vending business, but the decision was made that this was where I wanted to head the business.

I was still running the snack boxes along with taking care of this vending account. One day the maintenance man at my vending account said he had given my companies name to a company that employed three hundred employees and they were looking for a vendor.

Before I had a chance to call upon this possible new account I received a phone call from them. A meeting was set, I showed up in my three-piece suit and landed the account! I continued to grow the vending business until a regional vending company came into my territory.

Once again, I was ready for a change so I approached the regional company about buying me out. A deal was made with the stipulation I was to come on board with them as the regional manager here in Iowa.

I sold my business, became the regional manager and now I am setting out on a new venture. My wife and I want to see the US from the windshield of our motor home. Traveling can be expensive, so I started looking for a way to earn money that would allow us to travel.

I set myself a new goal:

"I will find a job that makes me happy to jump out of bed in the morning, it will pay my bills, and allows me to travel and is something I enjoy doing."

Sounds unrealistic? I assure you, it's not. If I’ve learned one thing in life it's that nothing is impossible! Think about your life. What is it that you really want from it? And turn off the little voice that keeps saying, "It can't be done." It can.

Update - Less than a year ago I wrote this about me page. I am now able to say I'm bringing in about $100.00 profit a week and continue to write one page per week.

My ezine has a nice following and I continue to write one page for the subscribers per week. The ezine continues to grow every week. Ken Evoy, the owner of SBI, helped me to get over the hump. He also told me about the snow ball effect and all I can say is, "Thanks Ken".
